The Customs House Youth Theatre is open to all young people aged between 10 and 21 years old with an interest in theatre, devising and acting. The Youth Theatre meet each Friday in term time and produce two original performances each year. There are two groups: Juniors for Years 6-10 (10-15 years) and Seniors for Year 11+ (15-21 years). Sessions are led by Jayden Blacklock and Fiona Martin.
The Seniors have been part of the National Theatre Connections Festival since 2011, performing at The Customs House, Northern Stage and The National Theatre. This year’s performance, ‘The Ceasefire Babies’ by Fiona Doyle will be performed in our Main House on 16 and 17 April and again at Northern Stage as part of the NE Connections Festival in May. Connections is the National Theatre’s annual festival of new plays for youth theatres and schools
Each year, we commission an emerging writer to create new work specifically for our Junior group. They are currently working on, ‘StereoTYPED’ by Laura Turner, which they will perform on 26 March in the Main House.
All members also get the opportunity to complete an Arts Award at Explore, Bronze, Silver or Gold Levels, to see shows and to take part in workshops with theatre companies.
