The Customs House Youth Theatre is open to all young people aged between 10 and 21 years old with an interest in theatre, devising and acting. The Youth Theatre meet each Friday in term time and produce two original performances each year. There are two groups: Juniors for 10-15 years and Seniors for 15-21 years. Sessions are led by Jayden Blacklock and Natasha Haws.
The Seniors have been part of the National Theatre Connections Festival since 2011, performing at The Customs House, Northern Stage and The National Theatre. Connections is the National Theatre’s annual festival of new plays for youth theatres and schools.
To celebrate our 10th birthday and 25th anniversary of The Customs House in 2019, two writers were commissioned to write plays for both the junior and senior sections of the youth theatre. All group members were given the chance to perform a new play that had been written for them, and also achieved an accreciation through Trinity College in Performing at Grade 2 or 3.
In the coming year, the groups will be working on two new plays and sharing their performances in the Main House.
All members also get the opportunity to complete an Arts Award at Explore, Bronze, Silver or Gold Levels, to see shows and to take part in workshops with theatre companies.
