The Customs House Youth Theatre is open to all young people aged between 10 and 21 years old with an interest in theatre, devising and acting. The Youth Theatre meet each Friday in term time and produce two original performances each year. There are two groups: Juniors for 10-15 years and Seniors for 15-21 years. Sessions are led by Jayden Blacklock and Fiona Martin.
The Seniors have been part of the National Theatre Connections Festival since 2011, performing at The Customs House, Northern Stage and The National Theatre. Connections is the National Theatre’s annual festival of new plays for youth theatres and schools
To celebrate our 10th birthday and 25th anniversary of The Customs House, to mark the occasion, two writers have been commissioned to write plays for both the junior and senior sections of the youth theatre.
The writer for the juniors’ show is Reece Connolly, who wrote Wormtown which was performed during The Takeover Festival at The Customs House in May this year, when he was the festival’s first Young Writer in Residence.
The seniors will be working on a play by writer Alex Oates, who recently had his play, Silk Road, performed in the West End at Trafalgar Studios.
All members also get the opportunity to complete an Arts Award at Explore, Bronze, Silver or Gold Levels, to see shows and to take part in workshops with theatre companies.
Contact Fiona on 0191 427 8188 or email for more information or to be added to the waiting list, we are keen to hear from young actors aged 15 and over.
The Port of Tyne is proud to support The Customs House as a sponsor of projects which help young people gain confidence and skills towards employment.
