We are very pleased to announce our Takeover Young Writer in Residency 2024 – Jonathan Iceton with his play DEMONS.

Hidden away in the musty basement of Xaos Games, Low-Fell’s premier Dungeons and Dragons group meet each week in secret. Or, they used to. Once a thriving, nerdy community boasting multiple campaigns, now only five consistent members remain, and even then it’s a miracle if they all show up on time. Ti, Dan, Matt, Samantha, and Jade are a group of otherwise unlikely friends who gather around the table each week to fight goblins, compare polyhedral dice, and forget the doldrum of their normal lives. But recently, it’s seemed like even these five might be drifting apart. One fateful evening, they sit down and try to play a game, but their personal lives keep getting in the way. Will their characters (or their friendships) survive the night? Or will their own demons overcome them?

Jonathan is a writer and actor from Gateshead. He studied an MA in Acting at Mountview after reading Music at the University of Cambridge. During his training, he wrote and performed his one-man show ‘Stay Sharp Say Nowt’ about his experience as a Geordie moving to the South. His second play ‘Aftershock’ was longlisted for the Richard Jenkinson Commission. He also writes his own music. ‘DEMONS’ is his professional writing debut.

Jonathan says, “It’s a real privilege to have my writing debut at The Customs House, especially after performing in the Takeover myself back in 2022. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time playing Dungeons and Dragons: building characters, fighting demons and generally avoiding going outside. It was also one of the first places where I started learning how to write. So I’m excited to give people a deeper look into that world, and to show a side of the North East people might not have seen before.”

Jonathan will work with writing mentor Reece Connolly, who was also our first ever Young Writer in Residency back in 2018 with his play WORMTOWN.

Creative Engagement Producer, Andrew Walker says ‘We are so excited to have Jonathan as our Young Writer in Residence for 2024. To be able to welcome him back to The Customs House, this time as a writer, feels very special and his play DEMONS is such a perfect fit for the Takeover Festival.’

DEMONS will be staged in the Main House as the finale of Takeover Festival on Friday 31st May.

This work is possible due to the generous support for this year’s Takeover Festival by the Chloe & Liam Together Forever Trust.

We will shortly be releasing casting information for DEMONS. All call-outs will be advertised on our Creatives Page-https://www.customshouse.co.uk/get-involved/creatives/
