The Customs House is located within the conservation area of Mill Dam in the town of South Shields. Situated on the south bank of the River Tyne adjacent to the ferry landing, it has impressive views both across and up and down the river. The building is comprised of a 442 seat theatre, 132 seated studio/cinema, gallery spaces, restaurant, private dining room and an events suite.

For customers who may need to use a wheelchair when visiting the theatre or cinema, please advise our staff at the time of booking so a wheelchair accessible seat can be booked. It is not currently possible to book a wheelchair or accessible seat online.

Children under the age of 24 months* sitting on their carers laps go free. However, a £2 contribution towards our heritage levy will apply. If your child becomes unsettled, please consider others. *Exceptions apply

Concession prices are applicable for some performances to senior citizens, unemployed people, children, students and disabled patrons. You must state concession at time of booking, and proof of entitlement will be required. Only one discount can apply at any one time. A disabled person, who is not able to attend the event unaccompanied, is entitled to one free theatre / cinema ticket for their companion. CEA card must be presented at point of sale. Max card discounts are also available for cinema only.

  • If you are unable to attend a performance/screening we can offer to exchange your tickets to another performance of the same show, within its current run, subject to availability and a per ticket exchange fee.
  • Exchanges are not possible for single performances or screenings.
  • To obtain an exchange, you must contact us at least 48 hours before the event.
  • Tickets can be exchanged for a seat of the same value or higher upon payment of the difference in value. If a discount has been applied to the Ticket, then this will only be honoured within the original terms and conditions of the offer. No refund or credit will be given if you exchange to a Ticket of lower value.
  • If the Ticket have been booked through a third-party promoter, tickets cannot be exchanged, cancelled, or refunded after purchase unless the third party’s own terms and conditions allow for exchange, cancellation, or refunds.
  • Except where we offer an applicable ticket exchange or resale facility, tickets cannot be exchanged, cancelled, or refunded after purchase. Where a performance is cancelled or rescheduled by us or a visiting company, or where a performance is cancelled or rescheduled due to circumstances beyond our control, you may request a refund. The refund for tickets equals the price paid by you to us for such ticket, excluding the per transaction collection or delivery fee. If You have opted to purchase Ticket Protection, please note that this is also non-refundable. Refunds shall only be made to the person who purchased the tickets and, when possible, be made using the same method as was used to purchase the tickets.

Our free car park, situated at the rear of the building, is for the sole use of our patrons attending performances and events. 

Users of the car park do so at their own risk. The management will not accept responsibility for damage, accident or loss.

Box Office and Dame Bella’s are closed to the public every Monday.

The Customs House opens one hour before a show.
The Customs House Cinema opens 30 minutes before listed screening time

Reservations can only be made for groups of 10 or more. Group bookings discounts may be available on selected shows in the season, including special offers for school bookings. Group booking numbers are limited for some performances.

All groups of 10 or more must pay a 10% non-refundable deposit at the time of booking.
Final payment for group bookings must be made four weeks before the date of the performance.
