Takeover Open Art Exhibition 2023

The Customs House Gallery
29 May – 23 July 2023

The Takeover 2023 Open Art Exhibition celebrates the artistic talent of young creators in the North East as part of the annual Takeover Festival. This year’s exhibition unites artists from different backgrounds and age groups, including individual artists, youth groups, and schools.

Highlighting the richness of the local creative community, the exhibition features the diverse works of over fifty artists selected through an open call. Their contributions span realist paintings, illustrations, and large-scale abstract pieces, exploring themes that reference popular culture, local scenery, and more.

Expanding on last year’s event, we are pleased to welcome the participation of four additional groups: The Art Room Sunderland, Fulwell Junior School, More Than Grandparents, and Royal Grammar School Newcastle. These groups submitted works from their collaborative projects, which encompass paper theatres, photography, large-scale paintings inspired by our previous exhibition Prometheus, and a homage to Antony Gormley’s ‘Field for the British Isles,’ featuring 300 small sculptures of birds.

By bringing together such a variety of artwork, we aim to showcase the diversity of the local creative community and inspire a lasting passion for creativity among the many talented young artists represented in the exhibition.
