Express Yourself!

International Women’s Day Exhibition
Celebrating Women’s Identity Through Art

8th March – 8th April

As part of International Women’s Day 2022, local women’s groups are exploring the arts as a means of self expression.

At different times in our lives many of us experience isolation or find ourselves in a situation where we’re unable to find a positive outlet. Over the last few years, due to the worldwide pandemic, general mental health and well being have declined dramatically. This has impacted women especially hard.

In response to these challenges, local organisations have furthered their creative activities online and, when possible, in face to face meetings. These local groups are providing a positive contribution to women’s health and wellbeing, reducing social isolation, building relationships, creating space for self care and using creativity for resilience against challenging circumstances.

The diverse work on display in this exhibition is a sample of their creativity.

Apna Ghar provides services for the BME women of South Tyneside. By providing a wide range of opportunities, it aims to develop confidence and empower women to recognise their full potential, whilst allowing them to maintain their cultural identity.

Bright Futures works with young women aged 11-25, providing them with a chance at a brighter future by raising their self-esteem, boosting their confidence and addressing issues that may affect them. Through its innovative work within their communities, it sheds light on issues pertaining to relationships, education, substance abuse and homelessness.

CREST (Compact for Race Equality in South Tyneside) aims to promote racial equality and to assist people from local communities in South Tyneside to enjoy a better quality of life and to raise aspirations and ensure their voice is heard.

Sangini is a Black and minority ethnic (BME) led, multicultural women’s arts organisation based in South Shields, Tyne and Wear, seeking to improve the quality of women’s lives by increasing their wellbeing through the arts, celebrating cultural diversity.

WHiST (Women’s Health in South Tyneside) provides holistic support services for women by women, empowering them to live happier, healthier and confident lives through a range of services, including counselling, education, exercise and employment support.
