The Cave

The new page for all things The Cave!

As you may (or may not!) be aware, The Customs House recently took over the running of the former Tyne Dock Youth Centre - The Cave. Faced with potential closure, and following a public campaign to save it, South Tyneside Council approached us and asked if we would take over the day to day management of the centre.

Over the past few months we have been working with a number of companies, including Northumbrian Water, Port of Tyne, Potts Print UK, Esh Construction, Seymours Civil Engineering, Kwik Flow, MWH Global, Aspire IT, Interserve, Grontmij, Lucion Environmental, South Tyneside Décor and The Shields Gazette, to breathe new life into the building and make it an exciting space for all the community.

An official launch took place on Saturday July 28, where the public were invited to come along to see all of the amazing work that has taken place so far.

As well as the current groups and activities that meet and take place at The Cave, we are always looking to increase our outreach to the community, and will continue to develop the centre into the multi-functional venue that it truly is.

Programmes and activities are subject to change. For up to date information you can contact The Cave direct on 0191 4563917 or Emma Horsman, Cultural Development Manager at The Customs House, on 0191 4278197 or emma@customshouse.co.uk

Custom Breaks - new members wanted!

We are delighted to announce that a new Custom Breaks beginners group has been set up - and spaces still remain!

The original Custom Breaks group originally held their rehearsals and practice sessions at The Customs House but have recently moved venue to The Cave. As a result of the success of this group, professional Bboy/Breakdancer Paul Martin from break-dance company ‘Bad Taste Cru’ has agreed to lead a brand new beginners group, giving even more young people the chance to develop their dance and performance skills, as well as the opportunity to perform at a range of different events each year.

The current Custom Breaks group, who were set up in 2008, have been involved in numerous events and competitions, such as Pulse, Just Jam, Juice Festival and Breakin’ Convention. It is hoped that this new break-dancing group will follow in their footsteps.

The new group will also practice at The Cave, with sessions taking place every Tuesday from 6 – 7pm for young people aged 8 – 12 years. The fee will be £3.50 per session. There are 15 places available and once the group has reached full capacity, further names will be added to a waiting list.

For further information on Custom Breaks and/or to sign up, please contact Emma Horsman, Cultural Development Manager on 0191 427 8197 or email
