In the range of £35,000 - £40,000 p.a. for 37 hours per week, with a requirement to work flexible hours


Principle purpose of post

The Commercial Manager position is a significant new role at The Customs House, and is pivotal in the implementation of its redeveloped business plan. Your role will be to oversee all commercial aspects to the business, rebalance the economic and social decision-making to drive through cultural change which will be necessary to achieve the sustainability of the business. You will lead The Customs House team in implementing a new business model that balances the social and commercial aspirations whilst also improving performance, developing new diversified income sources and streamlining existing systems and procedures to deliver efficiencies.

Key tasks of the post

  • Oversee the financial performance of all trading aspects of The Customs House Trust & its associated restaurant The Green Room Limited
  • Be a key member of the Senior Management group, which will oversee all aspects of business continuity, and align financial and operational matters across the organisation
  • Lead on business diversification and development, including assessing the potential areas for building re-design, expansion, and the business cases for new development opportunities
  • Lead all Operational activity
  • Introduce cost centre accounting, recharges and consistent pricing for use of The Customs House space as part of the development of a new pricing and hire charge strategy
  • Set and monitor sales targets for each area of the business
  • Support teams understanding and implementation of strategies to improve sales, achieve efficiencies and create an integrated approach to income generation and planning across the organisation
  • Ensure essential linkages are in place for the Operations and Events departments of The Customs House
  • Encourage a process of review and improvement, idea generation and test trading
  • Encourage budgetary responsibility and ‘ownership’ in each department

Person Specification


  • Good understanding of financial planning in a trading environment, including profit margins
  • Ability to lead and manage staff
  • Ability to think and plan strategically
  • Work as part of a small senior team
  • Business planning experience
  • Knowledge and experience of sales


  • Knowledge and experience of social enterprise
  • Knowledge and experience of trading in the arts sector
  • Audience / customer development experience
  • Knowledge and experience of the hospitality industry
