Call Out for Entries: Terry Kelly Poetry Prize 2022

Published: 3rd May 2022

The annual Terry Kelly Poetry Prize for North East writers aged 25 and under is now open for submissions.

The prize commemorates the life of Shields Gazette journalist and poetry lover Terry Kelly by encouraging young people to write poems and share their voices.

We are interested in hearing from children and young people who might otherwise not have their voices heard, and we are looking for poems with something to say about our region, the people of the North East and the poets’ own lives.

There are three age categories:

  • 11 and under
  • 12-15
  • 16-25

Shortlisted poems will be published in an anthology and the chosen poets will be invited to a special event at The Customs House. The event on Wednesday 1st June 6:30pm will feature live music and spoken word performances planned by young creatives.

At the event, poets will receive copies of the poetry publication and find out who has won the Terry Kelly Poetry Prize 2022, with winners given the chance to perform their work on stage. There is no cost for tickets, and poets can also book for their guests to attend.

The deadline for entries is 5pm on Sunday 22nd May. Interested writers should apply to [email protected] including their:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Location in the North East
